Do all-in-one printer/fax devices use modem?

I have a firnd who is adamant she wants an all-in-one fax/scanner/copier/printer machine. Nothing wrong with that - they ARE easy to use when they work right. 😉

But does the fax feature use the computer's modem, or does it have its own physical dialing mechanism like a regular FAX machine?
 
Some do, some don't. Stay away from models that say "PC Fax", because those are the ones that use your modem and have to be connected to a PC.
