Do air purifiers/cleaners reduce dust?

I've never had an air purifier before, but a friend recommended one because I have allergies. He said he loves his and that it's always picking up crud out of the air. Aside from the potential health benefits, does it help reduce dusting in the room? I seem to be cleaning off my TV and HT equipment, shelves, and tables at least once a week with a duster.

I think it should do yea... Alot of the dust though i think you'd find in your carpet, hoover a few times?

We have a real dust problem in our house, i don't know where it all comes from!

You! Most dust is dead skin cells.

any recommendations on what brand? I'm thinking of getting one too . . . I heard the Ionic Breeze isn't that good cuz it doesn't move a lot of air . . . . I was interested in the Oreck XL . . . but i'm open to any recommendations as to what reduces the dust the most. Thanks!

Yeah, it seems like the Oreck XL and Ionic Breeze are both junk. I found a Bose-style bashing site here:

http://www.aircleaners.com/oreck.phtml

They have a TON of good information and recommendations on their site and present some very good arguments as to what to get. Here's the main link:

They definitely changed my mind about getting a whole-house purification system for when I build my house. They also have an article about the Ionic Breeze (two, actually), plus some good information on vacuum cleaners. Changed my mind about the Dyson, too.

I got a Kenmore from Sears and I'm very happy with it. It pulls a lot of dust and it's fairly quiet.
