Here is what I would like to do..

I have a Wireless router and an Xbox that I would like to get online.. I was wondering if I could buy a wireless access point (that has rj-45 connections) and hook my xbox to that, and then connect the WAP to the router (wirelessly)... Is this possible?

Here is a Pic

The wap serves as a wireless access point providing wireless connections. The rj45 port on the back is an input from the router, cable modem, etc. I do not believe that you can reverse the way an Access Point works.

You can also do stuff like hook up the wet11 to a switch, and then hook up the xbox and any other ethernet device (e.g. pc, printer) to the switch. Could be handy (and relatively cheap) if there is other equipment in the same area as the xbox.

Of course, with any wireless setup, there is always the question of how good your reception will be. Make sure whatever you buy is returnable. It would cost a little more, but you could do something similar with powerline or phoneline equipment if you couldn't get wireless to work.

Your better off getting an AP that can act as a workgroup bridge. Linksys calls it "client mode" on their AP's. Pretty much all the SOHO dedicated AP's can do this. Your tethered with a dedicated WGB like the WET11. It'll work but you have much more options down the road if you bought an AP instead. Not to mention they either cost the same or in many cases less than a WGB.

Compatibility is a potential issue. The Wet11 is supposed to work with any brand of 802.11b equipment. Some people have said that the Wap11 in client mode will only work with other Linksys equipment. I don't know if that is true or not. But as always, make sure whatever you get is returnable.

If your system is on the same IP band as the WET11 you just plug it into the Xbox, and you are done.

Access Points need to be connected first to a computer for configuration.

I personally will buy an Access Point, probably the D-Link 900AP+ since it is one of the most flexible Access Point (Gateway, Bridge, Client, Repeater, and 22Mb/sec capable). I like the flexibility to be able to use my hardware in different situations when necessary.

The WET11 is a Dumb Blue Driverless Client Card. Has its value when you just want to stick it somewhere and forget about it.

Price wise they are all in the same range about $100.
