Do a lot of people know what flashing traffic lights mean?

Argo

Lifer
Around here a lot of traffic lights become uncontrolled in the evening hours. What that means is that instead of usual traffic light changes one direction becomes flashing yellow and the other flashing red.

The rules are - if your side is flashing red, treat it as a stop sign. In other words, stop let other cars pass and then proceed. Flashing yellow on the other hand just means "uncontrolled intersection". You don't have to do anything, other than proceed with caution.

Well, I'm finding a lot of people don't know that here. People go straight through flashing red, stop at flashing yellow. If there are several cars coming through at the same time, every body gets confused and start treating it as "Stop All Way" sign....

yes. I wish we had more of them in my area 🙁 sucks to be stuck at a traffic light that takes 4 minutes to change in the middle of the night on an empty road.

I saw some guy get creamed by a flatbed truck after he ran a flashing red light...

I kinda like flashing yellow/red myself -- much less waiting if there's no traffic..

How difficult is it to understand?!
flashing green -> protected left turn
flashing yellow -> proceed with caution
flashing red -> same as stop sign

I mean really, is it that confusing?!?!

a lot of people don't pay attention when they drive in general. it's not too hard to figure out since the red lights are the feeder or crossroads while the yellows handle the bulk of the traffic anyway.

Me Neither. His post reeks of treachery.

<sarcasm>
Dudes, it's totally obvious how it can get confusing! Like, the light turns red, right? AND THEN IT SHUTS OFF! And they're like "Oh it shut off ok I can go." AND THEN IT TURNS BACK ON! And they're like "OMGWTFASSMASTER ahhh!" and then it turns back off.

Stop. Go. Stop. Go. Stop. Go...........

it's a Canadian thing.

I love when construction guys are doing some road work or something so they need to temporarily disable the traffic lights (make them all flash red) during the middle of the day. Two lanes, four ways, lots of traffic, its suicide.

Basically... Heh, I didn't know it was a Canadian-only thing. I guess Americans can't handle the complexity of it 😉 😛

Can you turn right on an advanced-turn arrow? 😛
