Do 64bit Processors Need 64bit Software?

I was recently thinking about upgrading my computer from an AMD Sempron to an AMD Athalon 64bit processor. I was wondering if using a 64bit processor would require 64bit software for better performance. I have a normal version of Windows XP and I dont have any games specifically for 64bit computers. I usually use my computer for internet browsing, games, and Microsoft Office, but I would also like to be able to do image and video editing with a more powerful processor.

I would just like to know if I will notice a significant speed boost, with the new processor, in general computing without having to buy new software. Would it be better to buy new software? How is the general compatability of 64bit processors? Or should I just get a faster 32bit processor?

In theory, you get better performance running 64bit code than running 32bit code on AMD CPUs. The problem is that Windows X64 driver support is horrible and the software support for 64bits just isn't there. So in the real world, with some notable exceptions (like 3D modeling software and other calculation-heavy apps), you end up having similar or slightly worse performance by running 64bit windows.

Getting a faster CPU will certianly be cheaper than upgrading ALL your software, and you'll have less headches to deal with.

All x86 64-bit-capable cpu's have absolutely no problems whatsoever running 32-bit OSes and softwear. I've had my Skt. 754 Athlon64-based system for at least 2 years, and just built a new Skt. 939-based system with a dual-core X2-4400. Both run 32-bit OSes and software only, and do it very, very well.

frankly 64 bit has been dissapointing, i remember how hyped up it was too...but no..these chips run 32bit code fine.

If I bought a bought an AMD 64bit processor or a Pentium 4 processor for about the same price, which one would give me the best performance using the same software I already have?

amd 64 compare to p4. i'd say amd 64 will be better.

In time 64bit will leave 32bit in the dust, but there's no reason to buy a 32bit cpu anymore(hasn't been for a few years in fact).
