Do 30 inch monitors REQUIRE dual-link DVI?

I have the NEC 3090WQXi. Will it work on only one DVI cable input on resolutions that are not native? I know I need dual-link to get the full resolution, but should I be seeing anything on the screen if I only have one DVI input plugged in?

Cannot say for your NEC, but with my Dell, i get only 1280x800 if i use non-dual link.

The way you are wording it sounds like you are talking about using two cables though.

You only need ONE dual-link cable plugged in.

this. it's also why most all 30 inch displays dont come with HDMI input, but tons of 1920x1200 capable models do. for example, my Hanns-G 27.5 inch panel only has 2 inputs, HDMI and VGA, but it came with an HDMI>DVI cable and a component>VGA cable so i would have support for everything else built in.

ed: hopefully this will change in the future though with an update to the HDMI spec
