DNS?

is there anythign wrong with using a DNS that isn't given by your ISP? like does browsing slow down or anything like that?

seems the DNS of my ISP is down- i can only access sites through IP addresses. i manually changed my settings to another DNS and now it works fine, but is there any performance degregation if i just leave it like this instead of switching back to my ISP's DNS?

Thanks!

This is an odd coincidence...this morning and last night my ISP's DNS seemed to be hosed too. About half the time a DNS error would come up, the other half it would work. I thought it was a virus infecting the hosts file at first, but yahoo would load one second and then not load the next.

It seems to be better now. Do you use adelphia?

There's no problem, but I've known a few admins who'd get all bent out of shape if they thought someone was "stealing" their DNS. I've usually picked a few random but reliable DNS machines out there to "borrow" while I was setting up and testing early versions of the network out here.

If you're worried about performance, you could always do a traceroute to the servers of interest. The ones given to you by your ISP may not be as close as you might think.

it is fine

there are some "public" DNS servers, i use those when i don't know what the DNS for an ISP is

google public DNS and you'll get some numbers , i use these

128.32.136.9
128.32.136.12
