DNS (server not found) error -- please help!

Something weird happening here and I need your help?

I?m using my laptop (ThinkPad T22) on a corporate network using 100BaseT interface. What happens is that very often using a fixed IP address, while browsing a website, I get a DNS error as if the connection cannot be established. If I wait a couple a seconds and try again, the same page comes up w/o any problems. Also, browsing complicated pages with lots of graphics and media, the display is choppy along with the DNS (page not found) error.

What is this? I think I need to tweak with my network setting and I?m not sure how. Can anyone help?

Thanks!

There are several things that could be causing this..

1: The DNS server you've assigned yourself with your static IP could be flakey. Try to find another one to use. Find another PC that uses DHCP and make sure that you've manually configured all the DNS servers they have setup.

2: You could have some kind of communication problem on the network causing these errors, and DNS errors could just be a symptom of something deeper. Try and ping something on the network (Your DNS server might not be the best choice in case it is flaking out - Try one of the file server, e-mail servers, etc.) Make sure you're not dropping ping packets and that the response times are consistent.

3: Is it just browsing that's slow? Can you do anything else like sharing files, sending e-mails, etc. just fine? If so, then it might be something on the corporate network getting to the Internet, not just your laptop.

Garion, thanks for your reply! Very interesting! It's actually slow when doing everything else. I'm actually using it right now while I'm typing this message and it's has been pretty good for the past 30 minutes or so. I'm starting to think it's just a flaky network ( to borow your term). I wanted to make sure it's not my machine. I use the same machine at home on a DSL network and I had no problems ( exception being that i used NETGEAR gear which has given me nothign but problems). But when it worked... it did so w/o any problems.

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply.
