Hi all,

I have a Dell desktop with Win10 and right now it is not working with the wireless connection (no internet, secured - DNS server is not responding when I ran the windows network diagnostics). I looked up online and tried to give a DNS server from Google and other free DNS sites but still no go.

Any other suggestions? Thank you.

May be you would like to be more specific about your setting (Network, Wireless Router, Internet etc.) and whai is that you are looking for.

If you can go on line and use the Internet it means that you do have functional DNS.

Hi Jack,

I am using a laptop to get on the internet via the same wireless router as the Dell desktop which is still unable to get on the internet, same error as I stated above.

When I tried to log on the wireless router, the radio button said "no internet, secured" and when I tried to open a website via Edge browser, no go with the error "DNS server is not responding" when I tried to run the Network diagnostic....then I tried to change the setting (as suggestion from YT video) from automatic DNS to DNS from Google and other free DNS sites, same problem.

Not sure what do you mean by more specific. Let see, Netgear wireless router, internet provider is a local cable company. Network = cable wire from outside to cable modem then to Netgear wireless router then to laptop (working) and to desktop (NOT working).

What else do you need to know to help me? TIA.

Did you try rebooting the computer?

Is the network adapter (ethernet port) on the motherboard or an addin card?

Have you tried unplugging the ethernet cable from the back of the computer and replug back in? Did any lights on the network port light up at all?

Hi Daaq,

I did reboot the desktop several times. The network port is build in the MB of the desktop but I didn't use it because I tried to connect via wireless (kinda hard to do by wire because the desktop is about 25 ft away from the cable modem) so I didn't do anything as you said in your 3rd sentence above.

Maybe this has been overlooked, but you rebooted the desktop, but did you reboot the router too? Sometimes they get hosed up.

Also, how old is your router? When was the last time that you updated the firmware on it? There are router "viruses" / "worms", that infect routers and re-direct DNS queries from PCs on your LAN to "bad" versions of sites.

Reinstall network card and test again.

Still broke?

Boot a live version of linux and test again.

Still broke?

Y: Buy new network adapter

N: boot back up to windows and run antivirus software.

Also, you can just drop a cable on the floor to the router to test with. That's can help rule out wireless.or wired problem. If they both have the problem, it's probably a windows / virus thing. Windows updates can break machines in fun ways like this, and I've also seen virus / malware do it.

To rule out browsers tho, you can also use cli and the nslookup command
