DNS lag at Windows start up?

I'm not sure if this is the correct subforum for this, so please move it if it's not. The problem is essentially when I boot up Windows, DNS outright fails or lags horribly for about 3-5 minutes. Sometimes, as soon as I get to the desktop I can open Chrome and it'll work immediately, but then it fails. Things I have tested:

-Different browsers (IE9) don't help
-I thought it might be my router since my laptop does it as well, but
DNS was fine at boot for a bit when I just recently reinstalled Windows, but started doing this again after a bit. I'm thinking it might be something I installed, but I didn't notice what it was.
-Flushing the DNS cache doesn't help
-Changing DNS servers doesn't help (tried Google's and Open DNS's after trying my ISP's)
-I set up static IP's in the DHCP of my router, but that didn't help either

I've been googling the issue for sometime now with no answers. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any advice/help/knowledge.

Cheers,
Mr. K6

EDIT: I'm on Windows 7 64-bit, system specs in sig

Computer still doing stuff for a while after desktop loads? Any service failures? usually those take 120 seconds to timeout.

disable ipv6 . it's on by default and will fallback once it realizes your gear sucks at ipv6 (most consumer gear is software ipv6, hardware ipv4)

Computer runs fine and everything loads instantaneously (as it should). I checked the event viewer and nothing out of the ordinary. Thanks for the suggestions.

Thanks, this helped! The lag now is only say 20-30 seconds as opposed to 3-5 minutes. I disabled ipv6 in the connection properties - is there a better way to do this? Also, my router is a Motorolla SBG 6850 - relatively new, DOCSIS 3.0 compliant, but I guess that wouldn't matter anyway?

Thanks for the help so far, 30 seconds is a lot better than it was. I'll keep looking.

If it happens on both computers then it has to be something with your router, especially if one is wired and other is wireless?

You also reinstalled windows and the issue still occurs?

Have you tried manually entering DNS into network properties instead of relying on the router for dns?

Actually, the switch to force ipv4 fixed it completely. After the last day and a few reboots I'm able surf the minute I log into Windows. This is awesome, great catch Emulex .

Just to go through my thinking, I thought it was the router at first too, since it was the common factor. However, I reassessed that when I reinstalled Windows and during the first few boot ups, the internet would work flawlessly the minute I got to the desktop. That's why I thought there was something changing within Windows that was causing the lag, which would make sense since both systems run Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I did try manual DNS using Google's and OpenDNS servers, neither which changed this problem.

That said, it's good to have an answer, thanks for the help guys. 😎
