DNS Error after lost connection during IE auto update.

Winsock 2 problem?

I was letting the IE auto update do it's thing when I lost my cable connection. It corrupted IE somehow where now all I get is a page not found and a DNS error.

Netscape and Firefox work fine so it's not a router or cable modem glitch I don't think.

Here is the error I'm getting,

://C:WINDOWSsystem32shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm#

I click a link and it goes to the right page but then goes to a page not found screen with http:/// in the address bar.

I've searched the web and some say it's a Winsock 2 problem and some say it's a page hijack or adware. Some say it's a security update to IE that got corrupted.

I've swept the computers with Norton AV, Hijack this, SpyWare Blaster, Search & Destroy and there is no current adware or spyware that I can find with current defintions.

I tried the Windows repair IE tool, unistalled from IE 6.0 back to IE 5.0 and then back again to IE 6.0 but no luck.

I haven't reinstalled W2K yet but I wonder if that would fix my corrupted Winsock 2 files if that is indeed the problem. Would I lose my current settings and files if I reinstall W2K over the top of the current W2K OS on the puter?

Any network DNS gurus out there? Thanks for any help

Check your HOSTS file and see if something's been playing with it.
