So this may be a dumb question - I wonder how many posts start with that? (that wasn't the question).
A company's internal domain was setup somewhat incorrectly initially (years ago). The domain controller/DNS server (w2k) was told that the domain is x.com, which is also the company's external domain. Obviously it should have been setup with something different than the external domain name. I will fix this the next time a new DC goes in - as far as I know you can't correct it once things are setup and running, right?
I have been correcting this situation as issues come up with external name by just adding an A record in the DNS pointing to the correct ip address. So for example so that they can check mail from an external pop server called mail.x.com I added an A record in the dns that points requests for mail.x.com to the ip address of the pop. This works fine.
SO the question is, they have an external name now that has 4 "segments" (I don't know what the proper name is): ftp.y.x.com. For the rest of the world this works fine, but for them I would need to add an A record to point to that so they can get to it. But w2k DNS won't let me add anything longer than 3 segments when I try to add a new record (it won't accept a "." anywhere in the name. How do you do this?
Thanks in advance.
