Dnet has invaded my Mom's PC?

Hello all,

I don't know how long this has been going on, but it seems that the Dnet client has somehow gotten onto my mom's system. Sometimes I will see a ZoneAlarm message that says DNETC.exe is trying to access the internet. I did a search for that file, and it comes up in the windows/system directory. It has the little cow icon. When I try to delete it, it says the file is being used by windows. I've always been a SETI person, so I don't know how this got there. I haven't noticed any changes in my SETI times, but for all I know this could have been on there the whole time I've had SETI. Times are still pretty normal though. 12 hours on a P3 500.

Thanks for any help,
Swan

Thanks guys. That seems to have zapped it.

And I finally got around to downloading AVG for her PC (she never did.) Found 11 viruses so far!!

Did you hapeen to see who it was cracking for? I'm interested in which trojans are still "in the wild".

Wow, sounds like some of my clients! I had a client that had 15 different viruses on her system. No wonder her PC ran like crap! LOL!

AVG is good software. I have been using it for a few months now and recomend it to all my clients. It's good and free, can't beat that!

My sister needs antivirus software. So AVG is free? How do they make a go of it? And where do I send her to download it? 😀

Yes, it's free. I don't know how they make money. Probably people upgrading to the better versions.

Oh, and Swanny, I assume you're giving Mom and all other users of that PC a "Virus-Avoidance 101" class? Sounds like some behavior modification is in order... 😉

I switched to AVG after a recommendation by some on this foruim, as I wasn't happy with Norton and McAfee starting to charge for anti-virus file updates after I'd already paid for the software. AVG found a virus in a zip file the other two missed. 🙂

I've been happy with it so far. 🙂

RaySun2Be, how frequently do they post updates? I'm thinking about where I work... our McAfee VirusScan 4.5.1 runs out of updateability at the end of this year, so we'll have to budget for something new. Free is good, but only if they don't drop support for their product halfway through the budget year, forcing us to accomodate an unexpected expense for ~500 licenses (agency-wide).

mechBgon, they update on a very regular basis. 🙂 I've been using AVG for months, its prolly the best FREE virus scanner you can get. It's better than some PAID for Virus software packages. 🙂 IMHO

When will people learn? I repair about 1 virus infected PC a month in my little side biz. On average, I see about 4 viruses on each machine that's infected. None of the users is ever aware they have a virus. They bring me their PC with complaints about slowness, applications not working and periodic blue screens. DUH!

I second that! I have used it for a couple months and love it. I started having glitches with Mcafee and WinXP. AVG works like a champ. I have mine set to automatically dial in every 7 days and update itself. I could never get McAfee to do that. I now use this for all my clients PC's that I build for them and there have been NO issues!

Yes, my mom knows about avoiding viruses. I think just 3 years with no doctoring is what did it in.

And yes, people are dumb for not haveing antivirus software.
