DMV sent a notice of delinquent renewal for my car. Can I dispute?

I bought my car a year ago. Tags expired in January, but to be honest with you, I didn't remember. On my previous car (dad's old one), the DMV would automatically send tags with a bill and he'd call me to let me know and I'd come over the house, write my parents a check, and get my tags.

I did not receive any notice of fees due or any tags for that matter. Now I have to pay $350, which includesd a $127 late fee.

What are the chances the DMV will listen to my dispute?

Also, what can I do in the meantime? I cannot *not* drive. I need to go to work, food, etc. But if I get pulled over, I don't think my story (the truth) would get me out of a ticket. Can they issue me temp tags? Where? At the local DMV office? The next available appointment is Tuesday morning. I need to be in LA this weekend.

So? Thats like telling the credit card company you didn't get the statement and refuse to pay the late charge.

None of this strikes you as wrong? I don't understand the issue here. Do you really just accept these things (paying fees you don't owe) or do you think I am making it up (that I didn't receive any bills)?

It doesn't matter if you receive one or not. Your tag or registration should have an expiration on it, and the burden is on you to make sure it doesn't expire.

No chance. The CA License plate has a month sticker and a year sticker. Big hint on what time it is due for renewal.

I am going to the DMV to pay the fees tomorrow, whatever they are.

Let me pose this question: Have any of you *not* received your notice and say "By golly, my tags (which I check out everytime I go to my car) are expired and the DMV hasn't sent me any bill. Let me make an appointment to call them up and remind them so they can bill me."

I found a scratch on my passenger side door the other month. It probably was there for at least a few weeks. I didn't notice it because when I walk to my car, I open the driver side door, get in, and drive.

Thanks for all your help, guys.

I've been in CA since 1960 and they sure never sent me tags and a bill.

Your dad must be blessed.

.

You asked a question, got an answer you didn't like, and now you whine.

You're lucky you didn't get pulled over.
