I bought a motorcycle about a month ago and just got the title in the mail about 5 days ago. I just got out of a stretch of working 15 consecutive 12 hour nights so I have not had an opportunity to go to the DMV to get the title transfered.

This morning I finally had an opportunity to take care of the title transfer. After getting off of work at 8am and driving an hour and a half to get home I picked up some "breakfast" and the title and headed out to the DMV. I walked in with the title in my hand and asked the lady at the information counter if she could point me in the right direction for a title transfer. It was about 10:30AM and the place closed at 12. The exchange went kind of like this:

EMP: "Title transfer desk please."
Lady: "We're not doing any more title transfers today."
EMP: "Really?"
Lady: "You need to get here earlier if you need a title transfer"
EMP: "I just got off work. I couldn't have."
Lady: "We're open until 6pm on Monday."
EMP: "I'll be at work.
Lady: "We're open at 9am on Monday."
EMP: "I'll be sleeping so I can go to work. There's no way to get this done today?"
Lady: "I'm sorry we can't help you today."
EMP: "Anywhere else that you know of that I can get this done? I have to have this done as soon as possible so I don't face a late penalty. It has to be done in 30 days from sale"
Lady: "Sorry, I don't know."

So at 10:30AM the DMV was unable to help me with a 10 minute task even though they were open until noon. I ended up finding out that a currency exchange could do the title transfer and got it done but had to pay a $36 fee to have it done there.

The lady was as helpful as she could be and still not do what I needed done and I have no problem with how she handled it. The problem I have is that with 90 minutes left before they closed they couldn't help me with a 5-10 minute task of getting a title and registration.

Does anyone know of any reason why they could not have done the transfer? Some rule about only so many per day or something I don't know about?

Because all DMV employees are spawn of Satan. Here, you have to be there before 7 am to get in, and they don't open until 8:30. One person working with at least three sitting around.

Because it's a monopoly. Without competition, they can give as crappy service as they want to. Who are you gonna go to if you don't like he DMV?

When he faced the same problem, Dr. Rand Paul created his own alternative DMV, the FMV, and issued himself a license.

My local DMV people come out from behind the counter the moment you walk in to see if you need help filling out any forms. They're incredibly friendly & helpful. Never a line. I've never seen them have an attitude toward someone in there who didn't know what he was doing (unlike at probably 99% of all DMV offices.)
