I bought a motorcycle about a month ago and just got the title in the mail about 5 days ago. I just got out of a stretch of working 15 consecutive 12 hour nights so I have not had an opportunity to go to the DMV to get the title transfered.
This morning I finally had an opportunity to take care of the title transfer. After getting off of work at 8am and driving an hour and a half to get home I picked up some "breakfast" and the title and headed out to the DMV. I walked in with the title in my hand and asked the lady at the information counter if she could point me in the right direction for a title transfer. It was about 10:30AM and the place closed at 12. The exchange went kind of like this:
EMP: "Title transfer desk please."
Lady: "We're not doing any more title transfers today."
EMP: "Really?"
Lady: "You need to get here earlier if you need a title transfer"
EMP: "I just got off work. I couldn't have."
Lady: "We're open until 6pm on Monday."
EMP: "I'll be at work.
Lady: "We're open at 9am on Monday."
EMP: "I'll be sleeping so I can go to work. There's no way to get this done today?"
Lady: "I'm sorry we can't help you today."
EMP: "Anywhere else that you know of that I can get this done? I have to have this done as soon as possible so I don't face a late penalty. It has to be done in 30 days from sale"
Lady: "Sorry, I don't know."
So at 10:30AM the DMV was unable to help me with a 10 minute task even though they were open until noon. I ended up finding out that a currency exchange could do the title transfer and got it done but had to pay a $36 fee to have it done there.
The lady was as helpful as she could be and still not do what I needed done and I have no problem with how she handled it. The problem I have is that with 90 minutes left before they closed they couldn't help me with a 5-10 minute task of getting a title and registration.
Does anyone know of any reason why they could not have done the transfer? Some rule about only so many per day or something I don't know about?
