DMV Inspection

If you fail an inspection at the DMV. Do you have to take it back to them ?

Or can you take it to an independant shop that is certified by NJ ?

When Do I Bring the Vehicle for Re-Inspection?

If your vehicle fails inspection, you will be allowed a specified amount of time in which to have the necessary repairs made. You will be informed of your deadline for re-inspection by the inspector.

In general, you must have the necessary repairs made and the vehicle re-inspected within the month following the month when your vehicle was originally due for inspection.

However, dangerous safety defects must be repaired and the vehicle re-inspected within 48 hours.

NJ MVC Inspection page

Doesn't say anything about HAVING to take it to a state facility, so you may be able to get away with taking it to a licensed garage.

so does that mean if i fail at the DMV, I can take it to an independant inspection center ?
I'm not worried about emmissions but I'm worried about the tint.

I have it very light (30%) all around minus the windshield.
NJ doesn't allow tint on the driver and passenger doors.

yea i'm looking into an independent garage that can do inspections right now, but i want to give the DMV a shot.

If all else, I can have it removed for free at the place I got it done.
