My rig has a P4P800 deluxe, with 2 Hitachi 7K250s on the SATA channels in a RAID0 configuration.
The primary master is a Plextor 708A and the secondary master is a Maxtor 40 gb.

For some reason, DMA mode isnt being enabled for the Plextor, it shows up as PIO from the Device Manager for that channel.

I've tried this so far:

-Set the IDE channel to Auto in the BIOS
-Set the mode to 'DMA if available' from Device Manager
-Set the IDE channel to DMA in the BIOS

Nothing seems to work - the drive is stuck in PIO mode which means it takes 30 minutes to burn a DVD as against a regular time of about 8 minutes. This is a recent problem and the drive has performed flawlessly in the past.

One more thing I've found under the 'System Devices' list in Device Manager is that the 'Direct Memory Access Controller' does not drivers installed for it. Dont know if that means anything because the Maxtor IDE is operating in Ultra DMA 6 mode.

Can anyone help me enable DMA for the Plextor?

Thanks!

Have you tried having the 40GB Maxtor as a Primary Master on IDE0 and the 708A on the Primary Master on IDE1

Some optical drives have a jumper on them to select between PIO and DMA modes. Looks like the 708 has a top speed of PIO-4 (16MB/Sec)/UDMA Mode 2 (33MB/Sec).

I just tried switching the Plextor to IDE1 and the Maxtor to IDE0.

Voila!!!

They're both operating in DMA mode now - the Maxtor in DMA6 and the Plextor in DMA2. Both drives are configured as Masters on the primary & secondary channels and there arent any slaves.

Dont know what went on here, but it worked, thanks!

I would like to know whats going on though...

It's almost always cloudy here in the winter. As they say, six months of winter and six months of poor sledding...
