DMA AND RDRAM

not sure if this goes here but here goes.

am i right in thinking that you cannot do DMA with RDRAM?

Not sure exactly what you are trying to drive at here, but normally DMA applies to peripherals. The CPU is bypassed for the peripheral to directly access the RAM/memory.

Since RDRAM simply takes the place of SDRAM, there should be no reason DMA cannot be activated on IDE devices and such in an RDRAM system.

well, i was trying to use dma on my burner. from what i have learned, sdram memory is used in groups. for example, if an egg carton was the sdram and the information going in and out were the eggs, the carton would need to be filled before it can be emptied so that new eggs can come in. however, the reason rdram is faster, is that it doesn't need to wait for the carton to get filled. each space in the carton has its own channel for info to go in and out of.

what happends is that when i choose DMA and i restart the machine when it prompts me to, i do. then when the machine boots back up, it asks me again to restart without me having done anything. then after that boot up, dma is no longer active.

any thoughts???

<< then after that boot up, dma is no longer active >>

that's usually an indication that windows doesn't support that transfer mode for that piece of hardware!

the thing is, a buddy of mine has the same burner with the same OS but everything else is different. should i not assume that it would work with mine?

Maybe you want to check that you have the latest firmware for your burner?

you mean the drivers?? the thing is, how come it works for my buddy and not for mine? we have the same damn burner and the same damn OS! AHHH...thankz for everything guys!

oh yeah, do any of you use ez cd creator??? if it does, does yours under buffer!!??

oh yeah...ANDY...i went to iomega's web site and there are no new drivers. actually, there are no drivers on that web site. now what do i do?🙁

Can you turn on DMA for your harddrive? If not, you might need an updated IDE controller driver or motherboard chipset driver.

will turning DMA ON on my hard drive work?? what wil taht do? i just wanna be able to burn a cd in 7 minutes!!! it takes me 12 -13!! ahhhhh!!
