Izzit good to run Norton Disk Doctor often to check the HDD problems?
I am now using a WD 800JB.
Before this, I have three DM +9 60GB failed.
The 1st one died of overheating, Cos I didn't install any cooling fans to it (I used it on my old pc case with no fans at all, except the CPU fan).
After the 1st HDD failed, I bought a HDD cooling fan to cool my 2nd HDD.
After that, the time worked fine until 1 month later. This time, I scanned the HDD using NDD *Norton Disk Doctor*, the HDD became extremely slow after finishing doing the full surface scan.
Note: *I scanned the HDD twice only in that particular month, but it failed only after I scanned for the 2nd time*
Initially, I didn't think that something was going wrong, So I just restarted the PC. The PC couldn't boot into Win XP Pro!!!
So I used the Maxtor PowerMax utility to diagnose the HDD... Surprised enough, the HDD failed SMART test. I RMAed it for the 2nd time.
For the 3rd HDD, the same thing happened. After the scan, the HDD became very slow.
This time, I knew that my HDD died again. This time, the HDD was used in my new PC, and the HDD had never been scanned using NDD after I got it back from the RMA process. For the 2nd RMAed HDD I mentioned above, I scanned it for two times only, and it failed after the 2nd scanning.
n I got my 4th HDD now, but I have sold it.
I bought another WD HDD, which is 800JB I am using now.
The reason I bought the WD HDD is that I think that DM +9 "60GB" is not subjected to high temperature, even if there is cooling fan cooling it.
I have another old Quantum Fireball CX 10.2 running in my PC without problems.
Izzit that DM +9 "60GB" couldnt withstand continuous platter spinning *I hope you know what this mean*, in turn, it generates a lot of heat during this platter spinning operation.
So it will fail for that reason?
Or is that modern 7200RPM HDDs are like that too *Platters can't spin continuously*
Is it bcos of that stupid Maxtor DM +9 "60GB"? My friends using DM +9 60GB had this problem too.
I haven't seen anyone using DM +9 80GB or above complaining about the DM +9. Does this only happen on the 60GB model?
After writing so much...
These r questions I want to ask.
1. Is it good to run NDD once a month?
2. Can platters in modern 7,200RPM HDDs nowadays spin continuously? Not like my DM +9, after the NDD scan, the HDD died *I assume the platter spins continously during that operation*
3. Does DM +9 60GB have realiability problem?
4. Is WD 800JB good? Better than DM +9 60GB 6Y060L0?
