i havent seen it but when I did my research for about 2 months, I ended up with a Samsung DLP.

LCD and DLP are both great, its more of a personal preference. Sony Grand Wega LCD's are great quality IMO. However the DLP just has a better looking picture IMO.

the new Sony SXRD sets (based off the Qualia line) looks hot. I'm going to pick one up as soon as i can find one in stores.

DLPs aren't bad if you don't see the rainbow effect. For me, however, I couldn't stand the rainbows so I went with the Sony KDF-E50A10. I don't regret my decision for a moment; the picture is absolutely stunning with Hi-Def content and better than most RPTVs on standard-def content.

In fact, I ended up purchashing the TV from SAM's club because they include the stand for free ($350 value) on top of the $100 that's already been discounted from the TV. If you want the Sony stand, your best bet would be to get everything from SAM's or Costco.

My brother loves his new Samsung 1080p DLP 61" set.

Some people notice rainbows if they look for them (he hasn't noticed any) but the newer models have supposedly really reduced this. Best is to go into a store and look for yourself.

I'm currently leaning towards getting the 50" Samsung 1080p (the -8 series) for about $3,200 if I get it locally or from an authorized seller like Crutchfield (less if I went grey market)

I bought the 50" that you saw at sams club (KDFE-50A10). I don't have it yet, supposed to be delivered on monday.

Picture always looked the best whenever I compared to any similar sets in stores. Much cheaper than the 1080p DLPs. Samsung DLPs are notorious for gaming lag, as are a few other DLP sets out there - so be careful about getting a DLP if you are a console gamer. Has VGA input so you can hook a pc right up to it. Best black levels of any LCD projection tv.

SXRD sets are superior but they are about twice as expensive, so it wasn't really a consideration for me.

The DLP's are getting alot better about the rainbow effect... from what I hear they sped up the wheel quite a bit so it's alot less noticable. I don't see the rainbow but I can't stand watching the DLP's for very long... (like over an hour) It hurts my brain.

just so you know, those TV's dont display 1080p. they only take in 1080p sources and display them as 1080i. just a heads up.

a TRUE 1080p HDTV, that displayts 1080p, costs over $10K.

they are only have the gaming lag for games that don't support 480p or higher. The reason I believe is because component inputs on the samsung cannot display 480i therefore it has to upconvert to 480p.

since I only have xbox and all xbox do 480p (i believe) it didnt bother me. i have never experienced gaming lag w/my xbox.

the lag shouldn't happen either if you dont use the component cables, but it would be stupid to not use em on an HDTV :p.

Other way around.

I prefer LCOS to DLP & LCD so I'm getting the JVC 1080p 70" pro version. It can take 1080p over HDMI, I am not sure which framerates. BTW The samsung doesn't display 1080p it's resolution is 960x1080 vs 1200x1080 so it's a close approximation. The black levels on the DLP are pretty sweet though.

She wants $6K for the consumer version, I am guessing the pro is about $1K more, hopefully less. You can get lcos w/ near identical picture at relatively inexpensive prices if you want something smaller. I think the 50" consumer 1080p JVC will definitely be less than $4k and the 720p is 500 less than that (edit: I don't know how much the 50"/60" SXRDs are but I know they can't take 1080p which to me is odd). Each display has it's relative strengths and weaknesses, JVC is a good fit for me. What TV/Price is at Sam's?

Nope, the -8 series displays 1920x1080 (16:9 aspect ratio). It uses a 960x1080 chip but 2 mirrors for the full 1920 addressable pixels.

That is interesting, are you saying it uses 2 DMDs?

edit: oh you are talking about the wobble thing. There are different ways of looking at that re: 1080p reproduction.

Well if you look at a CRT one way it only has _1_ pixel (the electron gun). The "wobbulation" does refresh all 1920x1080 pixels individually and refreshes them every frame, so I accept that as 1080p just like I accept the resolution of a CRT.

I would like the DLP, but I'm one of those people who sees rainbows all the time in the pic, so right now, it would be LCD (non Projection) for me. The Sharp Aquos look mighty fine..

what content is 1080p? upconverted dvd (blah). Honestly why waste money now on 1080p native displays. Not even HDTV comes in 1080p. I mean its bleading edge tech that really can't be used without deinterlacing and upconverting. I love reading threads on avsforum about guys bitching about lag on games that are output from the xbox at 480p and come to 1080p on the screen. Seriously just get a nice 720p that is possibly in the second or third gen and pay half of what you would with a 1080 native screen.

Have you seen 1080i on one of the 1080p sets? Tell me you don't notice a difference between that and your 720p set!!!

Have you forgotten that HDDVD and/or Blu-ray are just months away? You don't think there will be 1080p versions of movies, just so they can get a few more of your dollars?

Please show me links talking about lag on the new Samsung 1080p sets. I have a friend about to pull the trigger on one, and he has the Xbox360 on pre order.

If you're looking at 42" models, the Samsung DLP is not very well-regarded (it's bigger brothers, 46" and up, rate well). The Sony 42A10 LCD projection has been getting great reviews on avsforum.com, however. Just something to consider.
