The theaters around here have been nearly all DLP for a year or two now and I never get headaches.

I've watched a couple movies at a DLP theater, I wasn't terribly impressed but it was only 2K projection.

Theater DLP is going to be 3-chip, so if you're one of the unlucky who suffers on DLP TV's you should be fine.

One of our local theaters put them in recently and I've been impressed. Nice quality, and no scratches and whatnot that film suffers from.

I watched Pirates in DLP.

IMHO, brightness was great, but that's the biggest advantage. The added brightness really made the image pop.

However, the lower resolution was easily noticable. It was easy to see the pixelation in the white sand, and other high APL scenes.

Also, black levels were higher than on a good analog system. Because of this, some of the shadow detail was lost too.

Personally, I think this is not the way to go with Pirates. There's SO much dark material in this movie, that there's some loss of realism. This noticably lower the level of immersiveness of the viewing experience.

The brightness does make the surreal quality of the ************************ scene pretty impressive, but I think that doesn't make up for the deficiencies.

****** I don't want to give away any of the movie.

Not enough pixels yet to be theater quality, 35mm is around 8 megapixels and DLP is around 2 megapixels. They both need upgrading really bad.

The only theater I was impressed with was the IMAX.

Personally I think the quality is better than 35mm, most of the industry agrees, especially after a few runs of the movie.

You won't even see 4k projectors a "normal" thing for a few more years. A 2k rollout complete with a central server and a projection room server is ~80k per screen. That's a hell of a lot of money for theaters to pay per screen. Deals like Christie/AIX help exhibitors roll out screens, but at a cost to distributors that some do not want to bear. A 4k screen will easily be 10-20k above that. AFAIK there aren't even announcements of 8k projectors, let alone the amount of bandwidth or HDDs needed to transmit that data.

As it stands, the DLP rollout is very fragmented with individual exhibitors paying for it.

I have been pretty impressed with the quality. No headaches here, I have had a DLP tv for 3 years and I never had one.

Saw Spider-Man 3 at a DLP theater, and then went to see Pirates at a non-DLP one. The main reason? While the DLP was a little better as far as the picture quality, the overall comfort of the other theater was a lot better.

Just saw Oceans 13 in dlp. I think whenever the camera is moving, all the objects get really blurred and seem to lag. Looks great on still objects, but the moving scenery was driving me nuts.

I have heard depending on the ISO, the resolution of theater film can exceed 40 megapixels.

That's DLP as well.

There's a pretty wide variety of cinema DLP projectors. The most common are 1280 x 1024. On these, the pixelation is pretty apparent.

In that link you gave, they're using Christie Digital CP2000 series projectors, I believe. These are used in the better (or newer) DLP theaters.

Unfortunately, they're lying about the 2048 lines of progressive scan resolution. They're actually 2048 x 1080, so there are 1080 lines of resolution. It's still very very good though. They're rated at 2000 on/off contrast and about 500:1 ANSI contrast, which is very good for a theater.

That theater is a little out of my way but I've seen a few big blockbuster movies there. Awesome experience.
