DLink Router

I have a DLink router that has only 2 ports - global and local. I have the global plugged into the cable modem, and the local plugged into my hub. It came with a serial cable to set it up with, i used telnet and everything was working fine. Then one day it just stopped. I plugged the serial cable back in to see if any setting were changed, but it says 'no device found' where it used to detect it.
3 questions:
1) How could it just 'stop working' and what action should I take?
2) I have an old 12 port hub that I am using. If I plug the router into the hub, then the computer into the hub, the computer should be able to use the router on 192.168.0.1 correct?
3) It said in the manual to use a crossover cable on one of the connections. I had it working with out this, but why exactly would i need to use one? (I know what they do, just seems odd in this situation)

Any suggestions would be very helpful.
Thanks in advance,
David

the only time you'd use a crossover is from the local port of the router to a hub, if you didn't have an uplink port on your hub.

connect one of your systems to the router directly, with a straigh-through cable, and see if you are able to do anything... if you aren't it's very unlikely it's a cabling problem.

i have a very old hub and it doesn't have an uplink port. so i run from the local on the router w/ a crossover to a port on the hub? also, on the hub, there is a 'terminal' port. what does that do?

as for the router... if it is not even seen w/ the serial cable does it mean the router is bad?

Thanks

that's right... a regular straigh-through cable from your router to your home system. if nothing happens... it's not a great sign... i had a problem with my Linksys router... i couldnt connect to it and Linksys said it was bad... I had to get it replaced.

I'm not sure what the termial port does... does it look like a regular RJ-45 port or a serial port... if it's a serial port your unit probably isn't a hub it's a switch.

another thing came to mind...

check to see if there's a switch on the d-link router... that switches the local port to cross-over or straight through... i know the single-port linksys has this... and the dlink might as well. this switch will allow you to change a straight-through cable into a cross over. this switch might have been flipped causing all sorts of problems.

the terminal port is RJ45.
there is no switch on the router.

DLink takes like 10 years to respond to me so I'm gonna assume till they tell me otherwise that the router is bad.

thanks anyway

i think what you need to do is use the capacitator modulators and that should do the trick. dont forget to use a high intensity level 5 red laser, and only point it directly in your eye. after that, you should be all set, medical bills and all
