DLink Gaming Router worth upgrading to?

May I ask why he even cares so much about QoS since they will all be playing games? So all of the games will be on the same level of priority!

Wow, I always thought that was called the "Anandtech Video Forum". Nice to know there is an offical name for it though 😉
LOL, once it goes with a 500W $200 PSU it becomes generic. 😉

Tom's has a new article where they compare P2P performance with various routers. The DGL-4300 does well again.

http://www.tomsnetworking.com/2006/04/19/which_router_for_p2p/index.html

Another interesting alternative if you want to save some money and don't need gigabit is D-Link's DI-634M. It uses the same processor and has the same amount of RAM as the DGL-4300. In addition, it also has a similar (probably the same) QoS service -- which is provided by the underlying processor.

http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=458

It performs nearly as well as the DGL-4300 (and hence far better than numerous products in P2P and high-bandwidth internet), but shows some signs that D-Link might not be putting as much attention into this version as the DGL-4300, as it underperforms somewhat in wired performance -- see Tom's for more on this if you're interested.

I'm not sure about the wireless performance; it could be better than the DGL-4300, which, considering the lack of need for gigabit, could make it the better for the OP here.

I forgot to mention a few other benefits of the router. Currently the wireless console adapters out now ONLY support WEP. Given that my wireless network is using WPA, I'm not going to reduce the security of my network to get a console online using wireless. Well D-Link released a great adapter that supports WPA encryption not too long ago. The only down side is that it works best with a 4300 router. Anyway, pairing these two devices with the included option of gamefuel make this combo hard to beat.

But if you don't have a console, this little tid bit of information wouldn't interest you. But this was one of my main reasons for getting this router. Like I said, I had a WRT54G before (along with just about every other Linksys router and AP), and I think the 4300 is just a better all around router.

LOL, it would work great after using the Best Router..

The best is just giving information and hope that the readers are intelligent enough to derive their own conclusions.

$120 is way too much for this unit. However if your life depends on Gaming and you do not care about $$$, why Not you can buy tomorrow some thing else, it is Good for the economy.

Hmmm, I don't know anyone in this thread that said that, so are you just making a random comment?

FYI, D-Link also has a draft 802.11n router on pre-order which has an "award-winning QoS engine". This implies a base similar to the DGL-4300 (and a feature like "Game Fuel"), but likely much better wireless performance assuming compatible clients. It's the "Rangebooster N 650" DIR-635.

The normal caveats about draft standards and price premiums for early adopters apply.

Well it is an Integrated answer. So let me break it down and make it simple.

Part One, a little tangitial Humor to Break the serious life and death issue of Internet Gaming.

The Bad guys John and JackMDS.

You may want to just see how it works out for you. Take your current router to the new house, set it up, and see how you like it. If you think that you need some of the features inclueded with gaming routers, then upgrade, if not then you know you just saved yourself a good amount of money.

I "upgrade" to the gaming router(POS Linksys died on me)

The Gigabit switch does make a difference, even on non gigabit machines, things do quicker.

As far as the wifi ability, I think it's kind of sub par. While i've only been using a wifi device for 2 days, I notice the range is some what limited. Could be the router could be my apartment(though there are other routers with further range than mine)
