DLink DI-713P Wireless Broadband Router $100 (or maybe $85) at Gateway!?

edit:So far, it looks like they will only take one coupon code, making it $100 after MIRs. Maybe someone can figure out how to get both coupons to work together (the small print under the Winter Blowout section does not mention anything about not being able to combine it with another coupon. Maybe if you call them...

---------------------------------

Does anyone know if you can combine the $50 coupon code with their Winter Blowout sale code? If, so this seems like a pretty good deal:

DI-713P WIRELESS BROADBAND ROUTER

Winter Blowout details (scroll to the bottom)

$20 rebate (PDF file)

PRICE $169.95
MIR -$20.00
Sale -$15.00

$134.95 price before $50 off ---> final price = $84.95 ?

Ages of Empire 2 ($24.95) - $20 MIR
Asheron's Call($17.95) - $20 MIR

Current Microsoft rebates (in the box)

Cheapest on pricewatch is over $150. Of course, you have to add a couple free after rebate games, or buy something else to go over the $200 mark.

(sorry for the double post, but this seems smokin', unless I'm missing something)

It's working now but I can only get it to take one instant rebate coupon. Still a great deal for around $100 with free shipping. Good find!

tech bargains and bens bargains

not too many takers for this deal...I guess everyone already used up their Gateway coupons 😉

do you mean that once you have used the $50 off $199 coupon once for a given account, you can't use it again?? damn... guess i gotta make another account then...

but really does anyone know? the site seems to let me use that coupon again in my order, but it might get dumped during processing or something, i'm afraid to find out. =P

Will the ORiNOCO Gold/Silver Card work with the D-Link DI-713P Wireless Broadband Router? I think I read somewhere that theORiNOCO uses a proprietary security encryption that is only compatible with other ORiNOCO/Agere/Lucent products. This seem a little hard to believe. Has anyone heard anything similar or does anyone have these actually working together.

I am thinking of getting the ORiNOCO USB adapter (with PC Gold card inside)but read that it has a higher latency time due to USB. So for gamers it is probably better to use Gold PC card with PCI adapter.

Don't quote me on this, but someone in another thread (about cheap Wireless cards), said "don't get a cheap card, get a ORiNOCO card, then get any old cheap router/access point." I took this to mean, yes...you could use that card with most other wireless routers...

mdcrab,

If the gear is IEEE 802.11b or WiFi (the trade-name) compliant, then it's all cross-compatible.

Right now I'm running the ORiNOCO Gold PC card w/ a Compaq wireless router with 128-bit WEP. I don't see why ORiNOCO clients won't work w/ the D-Link DI-713P wireless AP.

And I totally agree you should get ORiNOCO clients. I replaced the inexpensive D-Link DWL-650 client w/ the ORiNOCO and sustained throughput increased by roughly 3 times. Anybody who says the budget D-Link, Linksys, SMC, etc. client cards (all based on the Intersil Prism2 chipset) are good products doesn't know what they're talking about.

Just how far will this signal travel? I rent an office at my neighbors basement. It's about 125' from my home computer. Will this go that far?

I have used Orinoco in conjunction with the DL-713. It's a very good combo. The orinoco is a great card and the D-Link Router is very easy to administer and has decent coverage.

125' may be pushing it, in particular if it is a basement. I'd say up to 50' no problem and 100' with slight bit rate reduction, but 125 and in a basement you may need an external antenna and be very diligent about positioning this device.

Yo

if "running a phone line" is an option, your best bet would be to run 125' of Enhanced Cat5 and do 10/100 mbps instead of even attempting wireless! drop a hub at the office and hook everything up to it. you will want to sink the cat5 a couple feet into the ground and probably put it in some kind of PVC tubing to protect it from the elements, lawnmowers, children playing in the yard, etc.

i'm no expert here, just making the obvious suggestion...

<< Also, there's a way to hack WAPs to put out more power, 100mW max. >>

please tell me you've seen the report on the web just released recently that shows that your WAP power is not really enhanced much if at all when you do this hack, all you are doing is dirtying nearby frequencies, please dont do this... i can provide a link if you want...
