There is this place at my university that I have been volunteering at because they need a computer guy but I've ran into a really frustrating problem. It should be simple, but I spent 8 hours on it this week and am not really any farther! Anyways, the computer had Win95 and was dying so I installed XP. Unfortunately, we were wrong when we thought JAWS (a program a blind girl needs) would work with the version the University has. So, I have to go to Win98...

I formatted and installed Win98, and it recognized the card as a D-link DFE-530 CE and it also had a dial-up adapter. The TCP/IP said "TCP/IP -> dialup adapter" and whenever I tried to add another TCP/IP or NetBEUI it would always have the -> dialup adapter. So, I tried removing the dialup adapter adapter and I would add TCP/IP and it would appear right (no ->) and it'd ask me to reboot, but after it came back there would be nothing but the NIC card there (no protocols/services). So, I tried physically removing the dial up adapter and reinstalling 98, but now it still shows a dialup adapter, which doesn't make sense to me since there isn't even one under Device Manager. Also, now I can't seem to get the drivers for the card (I checked on the card and it said DFE-530 TX), and even though I downloaded the exe/zip from Dlink, it doesn't want to use them. I even went down to this ghetto storage place and looked through boxes and found some Dlink disks but they aren't working either.

I don't know if this makes any sense for someone trying to help, but I am so frustarted I don't know what to do. Since it is a Compaq I thought using the original Win98 restore CD and then upgrading to 98 might work but I couldn't find it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, and please let me know if I'm not being clear somewhere. If this doesn't work they are going to have to pay someone to do it which I'd feel really bad about, or maybe I'd try to get JAWS my own way ;)

Dial Up adapter is part of Dial Up Networking. Honestly, the computer is probably fine with it there, but another way that you can probably remove it is. Click "Start", "Settings", "Control Panel", "Add/Remove Programs" click on the "Windows Setup" tab, then click on "Communications" then click on the "Details" button, and uncheck "Dial Up Networking" Then just keep hitting the "Ok" button. That SHOULD remove the Dial Up adapter.

About the Network card, if it shows up under Device Manager, but doesn't show up under the Network Properties (or Vice Versa), the adapter has been installed incorrectly. Try removing it out of Device Manager and/or Network Properties and reinstalling it.
