DJT Strangelove or How I learned to stop worrying and love the tariffs.

I think something few people are considering about the tariffs are that they are pushing the US into European like Socialism more. Protected industries and the tariffs functionally become VAT since they will be going to the US Treasury. This will also help offset tax cuts in that, sure taxes on purchased goods will typically impact lower income persons more, however since most of the wealthiest in the US are effectively not paying taxes, it actually will probably be about the best way to increase their taxes. Plus, its one step further in that tariffs cannot be bypassed by claiming the purchases as business expense (well, they still can, but they're still going to pay more with that extra cost going to the US Treasury).

So they will prime Americans to similar economic socialism as Europe has (thanks Republicans, much like Romney's healthcare plan in Mass leading to Americans finally seeing what has been happening and how socialized would be so much better, you're actually helping lead Americans to water by pissing in their faces making them have to go try to wash it off). Plus, businesses can blame the costs entirely on the government, but Americans will get used to it as Republicans will ram them down everyone's throats no matter what and Democrats aren't going to toss them out for the reason I mentioned. As they try to grift, there will be further demand on accountability and it being federal crimes, so all these rich Republicans assholes might just end up facing worse scrutiny and punishment for their behaviors. Further it will alter their screaming about the border, because the economic cost of the tariffs will make that the focus over them blaming immigrants (since Americans care about money more than people, including themselves). Now, they'll almost certainly look to pump that money into border patrol/customs/etc, but we know they lose that war no matter how much they spend (they're still currently losing it to drugs). Plus, have fun blaming immigrants smuggling in cheap medicine and other if Americans are so fed up that they're willing to start murdering health insurance CEOs.

Silver linings and all that, although in this instance its more like the gold flecks left in the shit (anyone remember stories about people - or maybe it was waste disposal processing plants - prospecting for gold in the shit of rich people because they eat/drink stuff with gold flake in/on it?)

LoL

Either they will use the extra income (if any) to lower the corporate taxes and/or taxes for the most wealthy, or they will spend it on something that in no way will help improve life for those with lowest income.

Since you're not one of the jackasses that just repeatedly called GotJuevos a pantshitter cause Turmp was never ever ever gonna get elected (I hope he "Told ya so" to those dumbfucks) while they sat around letting like 3 right wing dumbshits on here metaphorically jack off on their face then shit in their mouths by arguing endlessly about everything no matter how pointless, I'll politely reiterate my post.

To your point about them just cutting other taxes, so, uh, not sure how you can reduce taxes below zero, but propping up billionaires and industries by subsidizing them is uh * checks notes* Socialism so that will just further push America to Socialism (which Republicans have been doing repeatedly), kinda like I just wrote a whole thing about. So, your argument is "herp a derp they'll just do the thing they were already doing" (cutting taxes and then wasting the spending on stupid shit - aka what Republicans always do) and uh, I'll just stare at you blankly for proving my point exactly. Call it whatever you want, this is effectively the exact same thing as VAT in Europe, and it will normalize substantial taxes, to "protect" local industry/jobs. It normalizes it so that Democrats can leverage it when they occasionally get enough power to dictate some things and Republicans will continue doing dumb shit just as they always do and always have done (well, at least remotely modern Republicans).

You're not gonna stop Republicans from doing dumb shit, but they can keep pushing America to be more and more socialist in the most dumbassckward way possible. That's what this is actually accomplishing because they're too goddamned stupid to understand it and Americans are too. Does it suck for Americans? Certainly. But when given the chance to be dumbfucks or not, America near constantly shows they want to be dumbfucks. So they get the politics they deserve, especially when it both is and isn't what they want.

To some degree I get you point, but a "socialism" or as a more precise term would be "welfare states" (as we are all fully functional democracies with free markets) is so much more than just raising (sales)taxes.

I like the idea of consumption taxes like VAT.

Billionaires pay near zilch in income taxes.
They'll also pay very little with consumption taxes relative to the amount of money they have.

The solution to billionaires not paying a lot in income taxes is to fix the games they can play. We could probably implement fun new rules like, if you borrow off your shares to avoid generating capital gains income, that borrowing event becomes a realized gain for tax purposes.

I've mentioned before that in my opinion you have a unique perspective on things born of a creative intelligence that I find interesting to read but you do it in such a way as to give me the impression you have had little appreciation of your gifted insights in the past and present yourself with a haughtiness and forced disdain for the intelligence of others as self reward for that lack of proper appreciation.

I think you should consider this as a possibility. Why would a highly intelligent person expect to be appreciated for thoughts he or she might have that would be beyond the ken of most people. I think more self appreciation on your part might curb what I feel is a useless need to shove your intelligence down other people's throats. If I am anywhere near being right, that you lack the self respect you clearly deserve, at least in my opinion, you would actually get more of that respect. At least for me you constant harping on the stupidity of others is off-putting and a useless effort. For me you are doing to yourself what you say Republicans may be doing to themselves with tariffs, unknowingly fucking themselves, but in your case, not in a good way.

To be fair its not certain we would have had the peace and quiet to build this without the security blanket we've enjoyed since WW2

Perhaps not to the same degree, but wven with a steady 2% of GDP spent on military I would think it possible to have a welfare state.

Danish military spending since 1960:
