Ive read through alot of other steam/valve/css realated topics and cannot find an anwer for my issue. My rig is below and my os is Win XP w/sp2+updates. I have freshly installed windows, latest chipset, video, and sound card drivers. Obvioiusy the games are fresh installs on top of that. Im using nvidia 71.84 graphics drivers and 5.10 nforce unified chipset drivers. I turned off the extra Lan connection and the onboard realtec sound in bios. All my settings are default and ive removed all microsoft realated startup services in msconfig. I have no Antivirus. Doom 3, UT 2204, Far Cry run perfect and beautifully I must say. Havent tried to play HL2 to see if it werx 🙂 Long story short, CS S loads up fine and I can navigate the options fine and the auto settings suggest all the highest settings though ive relaxed the res to 1024x768. When i connect to a server/ any server the game goes in a freezing cycle. Frozen for @ 5-10 seconds, werx for 1-5 seconds and back to freeze, and so on. Their support/ unsupport site didnt help and they have no hotline for support. Nvidia said try 66.93 vid drivers and Bfg said the same. Wanted to consult the real experts 😉 before jacking with what appears to be a perfectly set up system. thanx

Its a sound card issue. I know, I know your using the latest drivers. Maybe you need some slightly older drivers, or you need to search and eliminate any others that may be conflicting with the sound card.

But don't get your hopes up - you may never be able to fix it. My friend had the same thing happen with his onboard sound, and it simply could not be fixed. Like you said, it only happens with CS:S and HL2 and such, but the only way to fix it is to buy a seperate sound card. I can recommend the $30 Chaintech 7.1 card on newegg, its inexpensive, and has very good sound for what it is. This is the card he has, and he no longer has the problem.

BTW, he has an Abit NF7-S v2.0 motherboard, in case that helps.

My sound card is the Audiology 2 and I read via valve support/unsupport that soundblasters are a common cause. I placed is as highest pci i could #3 with the 6800 ultra in there. I turned the onbaord sound in bios and still have this issue.
