And you get to keep the ipod.

A good DJ does much more than just run a fixed playlist.

I agree.

And a band isn't a terrible idea, but a personal preference would be a DJ. Better flexibility in music and a wider range. Although, for the right crowd/setting, a band is sometimes classier and fits better.

But, DJ FTW.

That's about what I get... I mean technically I only do from 8PM until 12PM or until the party dies down (latest I've went was 2A.M.)

Where are you located at?

And yes, you have to get the lighting as well as hope they're a decent outfit with good quality equipment and some knowhow.

DJ or a band is really up to what your wedding is like. What's the age group of your wedding crowd?

DJs are great as they run the show for you. The MC works with the reception hall and coordinates all the important times throughout the night (first dance, cake cutting, etc.). A band does not do that for you and you'll need to find someone to 'manage' the night.

Lights are optional, really depends on where your reception is held. If it's a classy banquet hall, you'll probably want to keep the lights to a minimum. If it's a large hall, you may want to spring for more lighting equip. It really boils down to what type of reception you plan to have.

For my wedding coming up in June, our DJ/MC cost us $3000. This is in NYC, where everything cost more than anywhere in the US.

Agreed. We had a DJ for our wedding, cost us about $500, and he kept the crowd going, took requests, etc.

Most have a nice package. I highly recommend going to see them perform somehwere first because the DJ has a lot to do with getting the crows into it and not just playing music. If you can, get a company that will have 2 DJs so one can be doing the music and one can be interacting with the crowd.

We paid $600ish for a fantastic DJ. Now lots of people have prices closer to $1000 for good ones.

And it should include everything. Lights, Music, tables, etc.
