I have a dead WD Elements 2 TB laying around, and I was planning to mount my 3.5" drive inside to quiet it down a bit. It uses rubber grommets inside the enclosure, which I feel would dampen out noise (the rubber grommets + the additional layer of plastic around it). I'd just need to cut a small hole for the SATA power and data connectors. The Elements should fit in a 5.25" drive once I drill some holes in the side of the enclosure.

Does it sound like a decent idea to try?

If not, what other ways are there to quiet down a hard drive without spending a ton?

EDIT: Ended up suspending the drive from elastic shock cord. See post #4

Suspend it. Cheap and extremely effective.

All you need to know:

http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=8240

Ordered:

0.25" cable clamp: http://www.amazon.com/Cables-43049-2...5663344&sr=8-3

Tent repair kit (for the elastic cord): http://www.amazon.com/Coghlans-Tent-...sr=1-1-catcorr

Hopefully everything fits together ok :D I'm thinking of attaching the clamps directly to the drive and suspending the drive from the he cable clamps (but in a slightly different way than what was shown on SPCR)

Should work. Take pictures.

Also, I see you're from Baltimore - Yankees suck. :D (You're probably not an Orioles fan, lol)

I ended up attaching some 1/4" Wire clamps to the drive and suspending the drive from elastic shock cord.

It's much quieter now, but still a bit audible during heavy disk usage.

Here is the result:
