DIY Outdoor Camera Streaming Thing

Not sure where this would go, so I just stuck in this forum, feel free to tell me where you think it should go.
Anyway, this may seem like a weird idea/question, but my dad asked me if I could figure something like this out and I said I would. It's just kind of for fun and it would be kind of cool. My dad wants to be able to have a camera at our front door that is hooked up in such a way that you would be able to stream from it from all of our 3 computers which are on a network. He wants to be able to open something up on the computer and be able to see who is knocking at the door before he gets up to let them in. Don't ask me why, I don't know. Anyway, anyone have any ideas for executing this? I don't really know. This is for fun, so I'm EDIT: NOT looking to make a large investment into some "security system" or something. I was thinking of possibly getting some kind of USB webcam, running a long USB cable to one computer and sharing the stream across the network. But I don't even know if you can share a USB port across a network, I'm thinking you can't but I really don't know. Anyone else have any ideas?

You'd want it to stream to a website on a locally hosted webpage... and you could all just open a browser and check...
