DIY home repair guys, how do I fix a distorted doorframe?

The dead bolt on our front door rubs against the catch and I have to lift on the door to get it to lock/unlock. I have fixed it previously by elongating the hole and moving the jamb plate, but the problem is back.

Looking at the top of door, there is about 5/8" gap on the knob side and less than 1/8" on the other side. It seems to happen a lot to homes, but well built commercial buildings never have this problem.

What is the orthodox repair for a problem of this type with doors and what causes it?

Pull the bottom hinge pin and use a crescent wrench to bend the hinge to move the bottom of the door. Reinstall hinge pin. Then do the top. Using a nickel as a shim between the door and jamb is a good indication when it is square.
