DIY DDR Motherboards by Christmas?

I'm looking to Christmas break from school for the time to build my first DIY computer. Got some money together, looking for performance, have the help of a friend who has built a few of his own. Been trying to read up on all this tech stuff to make my component choices. Of course, I've been trying to follow the news about DDR motherboards coming soon, hoping a recommendable board could be had in time for my window of opportunity at vacation. If such a hot new item is coming along, I'd hate to build the last SDRAM machine and miss the boat. But will the new boards have all the bugs out by then (hate to be the first to buy a board that sucks) and, alas, I just read a remark on another tech review site that the first rush of boards will likely ge going to manufacturers and the DIY market won't see them for sale for months. I didn't think of that question. Does anyone have any advice on the timing of this adventure? I debate with myself -- come on, now, after the 200mhz chugger, an AThlon 1G Tbird on an ABIT KT7 won't lose that much to a DDR machine, and the reviews so far talk about 5 - 10% boosts. Is that enough to wring my hands over? I need to start buying my stuff soon.

Any tips appreciated
