DIY Baybus... driving LEDs from 5v instead of 12v?

I've got all the parts, and figured out 90% of what's necessary to create my baybus, but one thing I've noticed recently is that I've been assuming I will be driving the dual colour LEDs on my baybus from the 5v line. Most of the designs I see use the 12v line and larger resistors (obviously). I was just wondering if there was a reason for using 12v when 5 will do.

Anybody got any comments on this one?
