Joseph Ratzinger, has a meeting with the Italian President, Giorgio Napolitano on February 23 to beg for immunity against prosecution for allegations of child sex crimes.

I'm disgusted... but at the same time feel incredibly sad for my Catholic friends.


Here's something from Reuters that says: Ratzinger will now have

legal protection from any attempt to prosecute him in connection with sexual abuse cases around the world. A vatican official said "His continued presence in the Vatican is necessary, otherwise he might be defenseless."

That's the impression I got as well.

So he didn't personally rape any children, he just helped others get away with doing so, and now he want to avoid getting into trouble over it.

the problem is that there is no source.

I'm not a big Benedict fan, but I've seen this article pop up a couple times since the resignation announcement... the article doesn't actually cite a single person and is just making seemingly baseless accusations. I could just as easily write up an article claiming an unnamed source told me that Barack Obama rapes puppies and bathes in the blood of newborn kittens every night.

when the story is picked up by a single credible news outlet, I'll give it some weight.

I don't see any mention of the Pope himself committing a crime, or being accused of doing so. If there's anything to this it appears to involve protection for the Pope from other priests' crimes (not his own).

(Seems odd that the Pope could receive a grant of immunity from the Italian President. I thought the Vatican was a sovereign state. If so, don't see how the Italian President can grant that unless the charges are from Italy itself.)
