DivX/Xvid playback stuttering...

Hey guys,

I am in need of some help. Three weeks ago, I built a new computer to replace my P4 3.0C and 9800 pro system. The new system is an AMD X2 4400+ and Geforce 7800GTX with an Asus A8N-SLI Premium motherboard.

Anyway, I cannot for the life of me get any of my Xvid or Divx encoded videos to playback without stuttering (by stuttering, I mean every 15-30 seconds, the video will pause and then speed up to catch the correct audio position).

I have tried every playback program imaginable, including WMP, Media Play Classic, VLC, and BSPlayer; along with every Xvid codec that I could find, including the K-Lite pack, AutoGK, standalone installer, etc.

At the same time, I have tried every combination of enabling/disabling Cool 'n' Quiet, the Windows dual core patch, and the AMD processor driver.

However, nothing seems to work. I don't have any other problems with my computer. It encodes movies using Xvid without issue, and it is very fast. HD videos playback perfectly, including both 720p and 1080i. Also, I don't have any stuttering in any of the the games or benchmarks I have played (Halo, Battlefield 2, Call of Duty 2) which seems to be a pretty common sympton of dual core processors.

I am using the latest ForceWare drivers from Nvidia (81.94), but had the same problems with the 81.85 release. This is all with Windows XP Professional (32 bit). I have also formatted my computer and reinstalled Windows, but the problem remains.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to what is happening? Thanks in advance.

I had a similar problem with the video freezing but audio ok but it was about every 2min. I solved my problem to a great extent by only using the official ffdshow compile from sourceforge which is the codec I sued. I suggest cleaning out the codecs very carefully and not installing a whole bunch willy nilly.

That's the thing... I have tried that. I've tried installing each codec separately, in pairs, in different orders, etc. It is definitely a codec issue, but I can't get to the heart of it.

Even if the MS DirectX diagnostic tool (dxdiag) doesn't list xvid as being installed, is it possible for the codec to remain hidden somewhere ans thus interfere? Of course, one would think that formatting would remove this possibility, but who knows.

ah maybe you have to use Coolbits for that. since i'm using a modded driver it's already there.

maybe the codec is giving you the problem. in that case, try using Combined Community Codec Pack (CCCP) here.

Perhaps mine is already enabled, as I have the option to "disable hardware overlay"

I have CoolBits installed, BTW.

I just get a green screen with MPlayer directly following the install. I am checking the settings now, but I'm not sure if I need to configure anything.

Well, it is. :D

That's really odd. I don't have that in my tab on the latest 81.94 WHQL drivers with Coolbits. And the NVIDIA driver has no control over what filter is used in the graph? Maybe that's only for the PureVideo MPEG-2 decoder (which I don't currently have). That would not affect DivX or XviD though, I'm pretty sure of that. What driver revision do you have running?

Alright guys, after nearly a week of trouble shooting, I think I finally figured out what was causing my problem.

It had nothing to do with the drivers, codecs, or media players.

Nope. I am pretty sure the culprit was: SPEEDFAN.

I have no idea how or why, but with SpeedFan uninstalled, Xvid plays back flawlessly. I am going to revert back to good ol' MBM5, but I'd be curious to know if anyone else has had a similar issue.

Thanks for the help!

I run SpeedFan 4.20 ( later versions don't work properly with my system ) on my SSF with the ffdshow 20050909 and Divx 5.2.1 codecs along with vsfilter 2.33 ( later versions have problems x/4 resolutions ) for subtitles and ac3filter 1.01a for AC3. Everything plays fine, but I don't have any Xvid videos. I have ffdshow set to use the Divx codec for Divx video and its codec for all other media.
