DivX questions

Well I guess this is two questions.

1) When a movie is in DivX format, why are they often encoded as part1 and part2, even when both parts might be 200mb or less, and both combined fit on a cd?

2) Is there a way to encode Vob files directly to divx (without using programs like dvd2avi/Tmpgenc)?

I would assume it's just to make it easier to download :p If you want, go to www.freebyte.org (maybe.com) & download HJsplit.
it's a free prog.
then rename moviename-pt1.avi to moviename.avi.001
& moviename-pt2.avi to moviename.avi.002

then u can join them :)

I was just curious if there was some sort of encoding benefit by doing that, but cool, I didn't even think of joining multiple parts.

Anyone with ideas about q2?

Clarify question #2, I've done my fair share of converting vob files to DivX with Vidomi, but I can't figure out what you mean.

From what I understand and have done the files need to be frameserved with a prog. like dvd2avi and then a program like Tmpgenc converts the audio file and video file to an mpeg-1 .avi file. And then that mpeg-1 file gets converted to divx with a program like Virtualdub. So there are two conversions to getting to Divx, one going to mpeg-1, and then that file to mpeg-4 (divx).

The first encoding I just mentioned, with the Vob files to .avi (mpeg-1), I got from here.

And then converting that .avi (mpeg-1) file to Divx I got from here.

Is there an easier way than this?

fyi, these are links to vcdhelp.com but I couldn't get to the site a couple minutes ago

I do my conversions in two very easy steps.

Step one; Use DVD Decrypter to rip DVD to HD. (10 to 20min operation for a 2 hour DVD movie)

Step two; Use Vidomi (easy to use with very consistent and good results) to encode Vob files directly to divx. (can take up to 10 hours for a 2 hour DVD movie with my rig, but I get a very slow 5.6 fps encode rate, tried Vidomi on my brother in laws new system w/Athlon XP 1700 and we got around 50 fps encode rate).

Can get Vidomi free at http://www.vidomi.com

If you need help you can email me.

Thanks much, powermarkymark, exactly what I was hoping for. I'll give it a shot and it sure sounds easier than what I was doing. :)

Glad I could help.

My offer to help you with Vidomi stands, it's pretty easy to use but easier if someone guides you thru the steps.

You can play with the frame rate to fit the movie on one disk (ok quality) or on two disks (very good quality).

Let me know.
