DivX ;-) Problems

This is my first try with Divx encoding and I'm having some problems. The first one I'm trying is The Mummy. It ripped fine, FlaskMPEG starts fine, configures with no problems and finishes with no errors. When it's done, though, I get and error just by single-clicking on it (in W2K) with explorer. Media player won't open it, nor will any other player. I just tried DivFix101, but I get the same errors. On the other hand, if I quit FlaskMPEG after about 10 minutes, the AVI is totally readable. The file is 830MB, is there a restriction on how big AVI's can be? I thought it was 2Gig, could be wrong. Any suggestions on what my problem is/how to fix it?

That happens to me too sometimes, and the best way I´ve found to fix it is to use an app called Virtual Dub. What you need to do is open it in VD and resave it, that way it´ll playback just fine. So first open the avi file, then choose video -> direct strem copy, then choose Save -> Save AVI, that´s it.

After taking a closer look, the audio seems to be gone after doing this. I know there's an audio stream in there, too. Audio was set to direct stream copy also. Is there any way to retain audio when resaving it? Thanks.

it's stupid for me to ask, but did install Divx Codecs yet? Why don't you use the Divx calculator so your movies can fit on one disc. Most of the movies that I did mostly came out to about 690-695meg so I can fit it on one 80 minutes disc.

Please tell me more about this Divx;-) calculator. What will it do and where can I get it? I'm going to try my first Divx encoding this weekend, got any other quick tips?

Here's the site with some walkthrough plus all the software you'll ever need.
DVD Digest. The calculator will calculate the bitrate and file size and all that good stuff. I'm using Advance Bitrate Calculator and it always comes out close 695Meg. I need the other 5 meg to autoloading menus.

DivX Digest has the calculators.

I've got the codec installed no problem. In fact, I just redid the movie overnight and it came out fine. As a side note, what do you think of the quality of the movies you do that come out to be so small. I pushed up the bitrate a little further for the latest one to around 1600 for video. I am really not satisfied with it at all. In fact, when I used a calculator and set the bitrate accordingly (somewhere around 700 i think), it reminded me of an ASF version of Episode One that my friend showed me a year ago. Also, how much audio do you sacrifice? I've been using 112kbps @ 41000 frequency. I'm not sure how much lower I could go with it being bearable.

112k isn't that bad if you're doing joint stereo. I like using pure stereo and so i encode at 192k.

Yup, MP3 here. I'll probably be switching to WMA soon, though. It gets about 3 seconds out of sync 1/3 of the way through. That's not good enough.
