Divx, is it a no-no discussion here?

I recently discovered Divx 😉 - they call it the MP3 of Video! and it is very good! but I have never seen it discussed anywhere on this board so im just wondering if its one of those topics that ends up locked.

Cool, I would like to find a full movie, they are pretty huge so I wouldn't be doing that much. But finding one that I could get at decent speed over cable would be cool, just for evaluation purposes. The trailers are fine as an example, but I would like to check out a full flick made from a DVD. I don't even own a DVD player or drive but this might be what changes my mind.

yeah I figured posting links or asking for stuff would be a bad thing... How long does it usually take to rip and encode one of these movies? say on a 1ghz machine.

I'm curious too - bumping this... Anyone compared encoding times on a p3 vs celeron2 at about the same clock speed? Just curious...

Well, I'm a quality freak, so my movies take a bit longer than most. My TBird 900/KT7 Non-RAID/128MB RAM/2xIBM Deskstar 75GXP 30GB system typically takes about 6 hours to do a 2 hour movie using FlaskMPEG. DVD2AVI is quite a bit faster, but doesn't have the features I use (resizing, subtitles, conversion to 24fps, and so on). If I were to go for speed and adequate quality, I could probably get it down to 4 or 5 hours.

so I need a DVD-ROM drive in order to extract the raw DVD data correct? which DVD drive is the best and fastest for this?

Don't worry too much about how fast a DVD drive is, the copying process is maybe half an hour even on my (I think) 2X DVD drive.
