Hi I am Cain I hv a pentium 166 mmx with 32 MB of RAM and a 2MB PCI Video card. I hv a divx movie and have been trying to view it I have got the divx codec and bsplayer now my problem is that there's no image when I view the movie on the divx codec and in bsplayer the video lags behind in slow motion but the sound continues to play normally Now I hv a problem in trying to figure out wether my software choice is wrong or do I have to upgrade? if I have to upgrade then which is the bare minimum? Please help

Thanx

DIVX is super hardware intensive. Note that right now almost all DIVX support is software implemented meaning it directly depends on your cpu. I think there are some hardware accelerators coming out but this is probably not going to go far since DIVX is questionable as a long term standard.

As I recall, you need to be up in the 500 MHz range to run successfully and it's recommended to go a good bit above that. The Tom's Hardware site is into DIVX seriously. If you go to TomsHardware.com and poke around I think you'll find a lot of information.

There are those PCI cards that play DivX through hardware, but I think even those cards require at least a 400 MHz processor. They are also expensive, about $130. I think your best option is to move on to a newer computer, possibly at least 600 MHz. My friend has a Celeron 500 MHz, and a lot of the DivX movies lag on his computer too. At higher CPU speeds, you could also get a DVD drive and watch DVD movies.
