Divx encoding help.

What is the difference between using Divx Low-Motion and Divx Fast-Motion codecs? And... between those two, divx 5.0.2 and 4.12, which do you guys think is the best to use for encoding? Pros/cons of each?
My first priority is quality. Encoding time does not matter becuase I leave the comp on all day.

also, is it possible to encode a dvd with subtitles? how would I do that? I'm using smartripper/flaskMPEG/virtual dub.

I recomend you using divx5

Divx3 sucks in my opinion, unless its a very low movement movie then its ok to use it but otherwise it sucks bad bad bad, as in dont use it.

Divx4 is good and Divx5 is just an improvement on divx4

Programs and stuff

I prefer Divx3 myself, and it definately does not suck...please. I've used it for quite some time using SBC (SBC uses 2 passes with both the Low and High motion codecs) and Nandub, and have found it superior to any other method I've tried. It appears to still come out on top according to MPEG-4 Codec shoot-out 2002 - 3rd installment as well. I wouldn't say that it is still heads and shoulders above the rest, but untill there is significant advantage to using another codec...I already have my Nandub settings down...and its clearly still very good. If I had to do it in 1 pass, Low motion 3.11a without a doubt...otherwise Nandub 2 Pass SBC 3.11a for me.

how do you guys fix the interlacing problem when you have sudden quick movements in a scene?

I just downloaded nandub and will give it a try.

So what is the diff between divx 5.0.2 and divx3 (low/high motion)? I read somewhere that the low/high motion codecs are hacks of Microsofts mpeg4 codec while divx 4.12/5.02 is written from the ground up??? is this true?

If I'm capturing AVI, I use Donald Graft's smart deinterlace filter (not while capturing, during the encoding process), if I'm capping MPEG, I use the Rage Theater's native adaptive de-interlace on the fly.

Nandub can be daunting, be sure to check out the guides at the Doom9 link Czar gave you. GordianKNot makes the whole process much easier, particularly at first...look for it at the Doom9 download area.

Pretty much true.
