Why did they have to name it DivX... When DVD was first released there was a second standard called DivX which allowed you to only watch a movie a certain amount of times..

its high compression mpeg 4. very useful for saving space with video..it isn't dvd quality, but is great for low bitrate. very high cpu utilization during decoding.. and especially encoding. download divxalpha311 codec to run it. divx vids are easy to corrupt though, anyhow, hope new portable digital video recorders come out recording mpeg4, that would be insane:) Probably could cram a day of video on a cassette that way. Course it would have to be a 5ghz camcorder:)

I think the quality of the DivX's are a lot better then VCD's :). VCD quality, IMHO, is just sh*t.

But so far I've downloaded only 2 and one of them I only got sound :(...probably corrupted as Zuc said.

Pretty neat how they compressed it though, taking more then a GB and shrinking it to 4-500 MB.

IamDavid:

I don't knwo about a limited number of watches...but DivX was a competing standard to DVD, and incidentally one that was supported by George Lucas, and it's my personal theory that's why he's such a jackass about releasing StarWars on DVD, becuase he liked DivX better.

As for the new DivX = MPEG4...I'm not sure how or even if it's related to the old DVD competitor...

no, the other divx was by the goodguys. That was a pay per play kind of deal which was bogus, no special features made it even worse. It wasn't written DivX, they capitolized different chars.. its been too long, i can't rememeber

Get the DivX codec here -- this will let you play the video.

Personally I think DivX is suck. Who wants to watch a movie on their computer? Or port it to your TV in a VidOut? Blech. Give me SVCD or give me death.

Wow?I always wondered why no DVD for Star Wars. But I am not going to waste my money on some VHS episode 1, until he releases a DVD he wont be seeing my money (not like he needs it anyway).
