DivX 5.0.5 Pro - 1-pass vs dual (multiple) pass encoding

Is there any difference in visual quality between performing single vs dual pass encoding when using the DivX 5.0.5 Pro video codec? I'm very curious. You may ask why don't I just encode in dual pass and check it out myself, I would, but my PC is very slow at encoding, the max I'm getting is about 8 FPS with single pass (Celeron 1.7, Radeon 7K).

I'm just backing up some old DVDs I own, and I want the best quality possible. My goal is to fit them on 1 700MB CD (each movie), and I have encoded several movies like that. The quality is fairly acceptable to my standards. But maybe the dual pass is better, worth extra time? What do you think, is it a significant quality improvement?

for a big action movie, i would say go with 2 pass. the difference is noticeable, in complicated scenes. if it's just a drama or a comedy, then 1 pass might be fine. i use 2 pass all the time anyway

Dual pass will allow the encoder to see which bits it can use a lower bitrate for bits that need it (large flat colours, low movement scenes), and higher bitrates for the bits that need it (fast action scenes, complex scenes etc)

2 pass will make best use of the codec and allow it to fit on your CD best 🙂

Confused

The first pass takes much less time anyway, it usually goes 40+ fps on my Duron 750 depending on resolution.
The Second pass would go just like singles anyway, not much extra time.
Go for dual!!
