Divorce question

I'm sure procedures/laws vary from state to state but just curious if anyone knows the basic procedure for filing?

Wife and I will have been separated for 12 months come mid-May. Separation agreement has been on file since May 2005. No children involved. No joint property. No joint accounts. There are literally NO ties between us other than the marriage itself. I will be the one initiating the process next month but I was just wondering what the proper steps are? I can't imagine needing an attorney with it being so cut/dry. I'm in NC FWIW.

Trying to find info on my county website but not having much luck.

Well... If you guys are both in agreement, you're not going to fight over any property, you're not going to argue about money... (In short, if you are civil to each other) You should both meet with a lawyer together (it'll only take one) and have him file the paperwork.

It'll cost you a couple hundred bucks for him to organize and file the paperwork and it'll be done right.

If you can't afford that there should be pro bono groups or legal aid groups in your area that will help you file on your own. Personally I'd take the lawyer route to avoid any mistakes that could pop up later. If the divorce is uncontested on both sides it shouldn't cost that much.

There are usually self-help places that can provide the proper forms and for a fee type them up.

If both are in agrement; then they will be able to advise you on the steps that will be taken.

Cheaper than a lawyer
