I was sent a 22 meg file that is in this format. Although it has been sent as a .avi it definately isnt in this format.
What do i need to play it?
Do i need to change the .avi to something else?
Is this format good?

thanx

well, it is AVI. AVI is pretty broad. do a search for divx or MP43 or something like that and you should find it.

hmm 300k is missing from the end of the file. Mayb that is causing the problem. Normally with AVIs u can Play a partial download( partially that is)

well it's the truth. compressing anymore would require cutting stuff out (like MP3 does), visually you'll see the difference instantly (becuase we depend on sight more), though audio would be harder. does MP4/DivX have Surround sound? I'm sure it's just coded in MP3, and only stereo (compared to DVD's MPEG 2 Dolby Digital 5.1 which doesn't AFAIK cut out anything at all). Visually DVD's have higher resolution, (720X5something in Widescreen), but I can't vouch for the quality difference between the two, becuase I've not seen it :p, I just know a bit about it!

how the hell can a DVD player read it... er, i mean HELL NO.

if part of it is missing, media player 6.4 will not touch it. you can right click, properties and watch it... or use the original media player, c:\windows\mplayer.exe. of course you will experience some problems.

and of course, if you don't have the right codec, it will not play.

Actually, if you want you can make an MPEG4/AC3 AVI that is virtually a duplicate of the VOB but what would be the point? Some people do use the full audio like DD 5.1 in AVI's but of course it makes it muy grande 'cause the only savings is then in reducing the video bitrate and maybe resolution. DD isn't the end all either (neither is MPEG2 DVD) but they work pretty well :) DTS, for example allows for variable encoding bitrates to make the audio typically better or more increasingly worse so that it can be fit on the same disc with DD.

damocles, if you have a partial file and cannot resume downloading then open in up in VirtualDub and save it as a new file. Make sure you select Direct Stream Copy for both A/V. Google is your friend.

Divx encoding is actually really fast. 2 hour DVD to VCD (mpeg) format = 18 hours. That same movie will take 8 hour to convert to Divx.
