So I bought this game a while back on a steam sale and decided to give it a whirl. Some parts of the game look OK by today's standards, but some parts look atrocious (see pic below). It makes me think that maybe something's wrong with my settings, as I've never seen this ugly of a lighting / grass scene. The colors look way off as well! I have all setting maxed out and the game runs smooth at 1080 with a 280x gpu.

Take a look for yourself

edit also have a question regarding the main menu - there are 2 choices listed for a new game: Ego Draconis and Flames of Vengeance. Which should be played first? Does it even matter?

Ok...
Game look ok at best most of the time
It's not the graphical revolution in RPGs
It's not the "standard" we see in western types of RPGs where everything is laid out in front of you, EXACTLY where you should go is clearly shown to you, severe hand holding at a minimum...

But...
If you can get past these underpar visuals
If you're a gamer that put story and experience before visuals
If you can appreciate not being hand holded all the way till the final credits
If you're a serious gamer and love well written and great RPGs

You HAVE to play this game until you finish it.

It's the best RPG I played since Planescape Torment.
It's unique, well made in all aspects, no bugs, no hand holding, just pure RPG awesomeness.

Every serious RPG lover should have played this game through at least once.

Your list is everything that I like about RPG's! I crave a good story and hate being hand held throughout the game, and I don't need Crysis like visuals in an RPG game (though Witcher 2 did spoil me a bit). I just posted this to make sure I didn't screw anything up because the colors look way off to me.

Since there is little handholding are the quests intuitive in finding the objective or will I need a walkthrough to consult?

You want to play Ego Draconis; flames is the add on (part 2) and will automagically start after you finish Ego.

The graphics are not the best in the world but are more than functional. I personally enjoyed the game (thought it was more enjoyable than DA and had better graphics to boot - but that didn't matter but as long as you are mentioning graphics...)

Having said that the bottom line is that different people enjoy different games and I can't guarantee that you will enjoy this game no matter how much I did. Heck I still like playing wizardry 8; though fallout 2 is just too old for myself (graphics in this case).
