I have been seeing quite a few screenshots from DivX movies in the reviews of Video Cards. The quality of these movies seem to be extremely clear, even when compared to DVD. My question is, how can you get these movies? Do you have to rip them from DVD? Or can you just download them from the internet?

Just for a little more explanation;), divx is just a codec, much like mpeg2 that DVD's are encoded in. It's advantage over mpeg2 is that you get the same quality with much less information and therefore smaller file sizes. Any video source can be encoded with Divx, although DVD's are one of the most popular because the smaller file size makes them easier to err...share.

You can do both, the first one is 100% legal (as long as you own the DVD). Not legal if you rent a DVD and copy it.

Downloading a copy of a movie that you do not legally own (in general) is illegal.

for more information head over to DivX-Digest.

If you are thinking about Divx you also might want to look at Xvid if you are viewing it on a computer. It is a codec used to encode/decode.

Yea... cause it isn't a PITA when you realize, oh great, I need YET ANOTHER mpeg4 codec that looks exactly the same and ends up with nearly the same file size

If he is getting stuff off the net then he will undoubtedly run into that codec at some point. I was trying to be helpful.

All you need, if you don't do any sort of encoding, is ffdshow. You don't even need the divx/xvid/etc codecs.
