my blackberry tour had starred to die so I decided to bite the bullet and get a Droid. found a reasonably priced one on eBay and bought it. I didn't quite know what to expect but after less than a month of owning this I am sold. it seems that this phone is capable of doing so much than my venerable BB. now I still have some learning to do and it definitely isn't without its flaws.

1. the physical keyboard is a joke after coming from the blackberry. it would be better if the phone slid out a bit more so the top row was accessible.

2. learning how to type on a keyboard is difficult especiagly since there's no feedback. just something to get used to.

3. I have to better manage my battery which is difficult because of all the goodies available.

overall: awesome!

what is this thing with paying insane prices for used phones on ebay and craigslist?

$150 for a phone that's almost 2 years old? that's like buying an old PC in the 1990's when that tech was moving fast

New smartphones are currently at the $400-600 price point. I don't know how much the OP bought his Droid but I'm assuming a less than 2 year-old smartphone for around $100-$150 is a good price.

That's correct, a used phone's price needs to be compared to full msrp, not a subsidized price.

I paid $130 for the phone, case, screen protectors, and car charger. seeing as how I had to put down $50 (cost for insurance) to get a refurbed tour when my first one crapped out on me, I'd say that I didn't pay a lot.

people like the OP are the reason i got $400 for two old iphones and bought a new ipad 2

paid $20 for my Inspire from Costco and don't care about the 2 year contract. it's not like the monthly price is any cheaper if you buy your phone outright

It is cheaper on T-Mobile. The non contract thing is nice to some people. The ability to cancel and renew service on a whim without any fees is pretty useful to people with unstable jobs.

People like you make the carriers happy :)

It will depend highly on usage pattern, but damn straight for some people it can be much, much cheaper if you buy your phone outright and shop around for prepaid options (MVNO or otherwise).

Either way, this is not what this thread is about. The OP is talking about a second-hand Droid and that's just how they're priced out there now. You're not superior than him because you don't care about being in contract. He can have many reasons why he went this route instead of signing a new 2-year contract and pay $.01 for a brand new subsidized phone.

Sometimes I wonder if the people that get so excited over their "free" contract phones have any idea that there's nothing "free" about them....

Anyway....I picked up a D1 a couple months ago, and also think it's great. Running gingerbread on it now, and it seems to fly. I'm very impressed with the service through Page Plus, and the fact that I can switch to a different carrier or a different phone tomorrow, without paying a cent, and sell my D1 for about what I paid for it, is icing on the cake.

i picked up a d2g and ported from verizon over to page plus as well. i'm essentially on the same verizon network, but my bill went from $80 down to $30.

i was looking at the HTC Aria when i bought my Inspire but it was on 2.1 at the time. So I bought the Inspire. it's basically an EVO with a HSPA+ radio instead of cdma and wimax and has 2.2 and Flash. 1GHz Snapdragon CPU and an OK GPU.

in 18 months i'll upgrade to whatever is $50 or less at the time. don't even care if i never get 2.3. almost everything in the market now needs 1.5 or 1.6 and up. in 18 months it will be 2.2 and up. by then i'll be buying a new phone with 3.x or 4.x

as far as i'm concerned it doesn't matter which HTC or Moto phone you have. they are all almost exactly the same except for antennas and radios. and now with new radio chips supporting cdma and wcdma the phones will be the same except for the locked baseband.

i had the iphone 3GS since release in 2009 and only in the last few months did i start seeing games which used the GPU. but there are still a lot of games that support the iphone 3G with no GPU. same with android phones, the lag in software will be around 2 years to support new hardware features. just like PC's and graphics cards

you paid about right, i bought my droid x from dguy6789 and then sold my orginial droid to someone on the forum for 115$ shipped with an extra battery, external battery charger, screen protectors etc...

iPhones hold their value better then most other phones on the used market but even old phones go for decent $$

considering when you buy @ the subsidized price, if you cancel after buying the phone for say 249$ you have to pay a 300+$ termination charge.

edit: on the original topic lol, the fellow who bought my droid was new to android as well and really loves the phone

At least in my area, the used iphone market is crazy because chinese merchants buy it here and sell there for $$$. My friends and I all sold multiple iphones and the buyer were always chinese.

If you get bored do some reading on roms and recovery and kernels and themes and start playing on a Saturday morning with it.

You can make quite a serious jump in performance and battery life versus the stock software that way.

I'm not a fan of physical keyboards. I had an Intercept before I got my Mesmerize, and I really like having the large screen to type on vs having a slide out keyboard.

The Droid keyboard is terrible. I barely use it, and I feel like even though I don't mispress often, my max WPM is extremely slow, and much slower than on the regular keyboard.

Also, when t-mobile offers a deal on a plan, you can change on a whim when not in a contract.
