Ditch the 3400+ and go with an Opteron 144?

I can OC the 3400+ from 2.2GHz (stock) to about 2.63GHz stable. I can't give my temps because the AV8 has some serious temp display issues, but I imagine they are fine, as my XP-90 barely gets warm during Half Life 2 (OC'd). I've looked at other posts and found that Optys OC a lot better, and that it what I'm gunning for. If I can sell my 3400+ for ~$180, should I buy a Opty 144 or 146?

Get a board that gives you reliable temps first. And if you are going through the trouble of selling your processor go ahead and go dual core.

I'd keep the current CPU. About 1/2 of the Opti won't exceed 2.6GHz so you have a 50/50 chance of a better overclock. 100 to 200MHz isn't that much of a boost.

if ur gonna spend money get memory (2 gigs) or Raid 0, or even a better mobo. My 3700 oc'ed higher on my mobo than my opty 144.

I noticed that cpu's are now seperated by very little diff in speed. The 3000+ and Opty 144 are 1.8ghz And the 3500+ and 3700+ are 2.2ghz.

The biggest diff to me was the 2- 16mb buffer hdd's in raid 0.
