That is such a crock of horseshit. It is your duty as a human being to interfere and help the weak and helpless, let alone a starving child.

We don't know what the photographer did after taking the picture, but if he didn't help that kid then he did the right thing by offing himself.

I agree with you, and know that is one of a journalists "vows" or whatever you want to call it, but sometimes, it just isn't possible. You have to interfere.

Also consider the hundreds, if not thousands, of other children that weren't shown in that picture but were in the same situation. There's only so much one person can do in situations like that.

Still very sad that suffering like this has to exist in the modern world. :(

A life is a life... even if he only saved one...

That was my thought as well.

It happens every day and everywhere in the world. She's not special in any way. I'm not surprised at all. Sad, but true.

See. that's why I contemplated even posting that. Just because I typed it, doesn't mean I think it's necessarily a good thing. It's called empathy.

Never saw this pic before, but heard about the famine in Sudan.

This is why it is so sad that the natives that were born in the U.S., the land of oppportunities, wasted their lives away and complain about every little things.

I know that. Hell, I don't even have kids.

If I did, I would never seriously consider offing myself (for ANY reason) with a kid that young. It simply would never be an option.

My responsibility to my child would supersede all other considerations.

Yes, it does. I'm not surprised either, and no, she isn't special in any way. But i'm not reading about all the other cases, just this one. I never said i feel sorry for her...i'm sure there are many, many children out there without fathers, because of suicide. Out of site out of mind. It was just the first thought that popped into my head after reading the little "bio".

Of course you have to post what you did to make it look like you have no empathy towards anyone or anything. Cause that's the tough way to do it. In all honesty, i couldn't care less about someone that doesn't have a direct impact on my life, but i can be empathetic, unlike some people around here.

The picture was was taken in 1994 during the Sudan famine... it depicts a famine-stricken child crawling towards a United Nations food camp, located a kilometer away. The vulture is waiting for the child to die so that it can eat her.

No one knows what happened to the child.

Kevin killed himself three months later, due to depression.

Brief bio on the photographer.

Just curious, if the UN Food Camp was only a kilometer away, why didn't Mr. Carter pick up the child and carry him there instead of snapping a picture?

It's not a matter of being tough or not. Showing empathy was the "Sad..." part of my post. I don't know why people make such a huge stink about crap that happens every day and try to help the rest of the world when they can't even stop to help their own damn community. When my own community is fixed, THEN I'll start making a stink about the rest of the world. Sad, but true.

You can't have empathy for ONE situation outside of your community? Just once? I'm not making a huge stink about the picture, or the guy's daughter. All i mentioned was that it sucks for his daughter. It's not like i'm going to go home and cry myself to sleep because she doesn't have a dad. If you don't like the way people react to things, avoid it (like i usually do). No need to be tactless about it. Perhaps some out there really do care about the child in the picture or his daughter. Good for them. I'm sure they encounter enough people like you (or us) that they are used to it.

Forget it.

WTF!?

In the Congo, it's been lightly reported lately. The nytimes and the washington post have printed articles on it.

Maybe the guilt over going for the prize over helping a child in nedd got to him, if so good riddance.

Like, oh, I dunno, STOP F*CKING REPRODUCING, DUMBASSES!!!

It's not like there is *no* food in Africa or anything. The problem is the families that have 6, 8, 12 kids for cultural/religious reasons.

I'm sorry, but I'm not going to lose any sleep over a family having 10 kids starve to death of the 12 they had for religious reasons. If they can only feed two, ONLY HAVE TWO. If you can't feed any, DON'T HAVE KIDS.

This isn't rocket science.

Same thing with the AIDS epidemic in Africa. Again, I have no sympathy for them. You have unprotected sex, you use IV drugs with 'dirty' needles, you may get AIDS. Hello - stop doing those stupid things, and bad things will stop happening to you. It's not like you can catch AIDS by shaking someone's hand or living next door to them.

I agree with you about people need to help themselves first and many of those conditions are man made.

But what about the children? They didn't ask to be born in such misery. They didn't ask to be born in those conditions, they did nothing wrong but born in the wrong places. They are pure innocent victims. I blame the adults for some of those conditions but I don't think it is fair to say to those children..***geezz, too bad, you have to help yourself first kids****

It's even sadder how the US could afford to eliminate so much of this suffering and yet they waste their money on killing machines to protect their own interests.:(
