Distros that fit on a 2 gig hdd?

I have a 1201n without a hdd that I would like to install linux on. Just wondering if there are any distros that will install to a 2 gig sd card or a 2 gig pen drive.

Ubuntu can be squeezed into 2gb, but it'll be very tight. With creative package removal you could make it usable. You could also try one of the lighter variants like Lubuntu, or Xubuntu. Personally, I'd probably go with Puppy. It'll EASILY fit in that space, and it's light and fast.

I have tried several distros thus far and while a few install I have yet to find one that detects my wireless card. I am trying eeebuntu and slitaz next.

you should spend a few dollars and get a bigger drive. seriously, flash storage is cheap in small forms. newegg has a $13 AR 16gb drive. SD cards arent that expensive for a 4 or 8gb version. cheap enough that its worth buying something for to have at least a little flexibility in what distro/software youre going to run.

/puppy linux used to be very small, iirc, though i never really used it

Which SSD? cheapest 16 gig I see is $49. I'd buy 4 for sure for $13 AR each.

OP mentioned SD cards and pen drives. hot deals had one when i posted, maybe its still up at newegg *shrug*

I am a cheap ass. I like to try to get the most out of hardware I already have lying around.

fair enough.

debian bare install and lynx? 😀
ive got a 4 gig xubuntu live drive, seems like a live-cd type distro could be used on a 2gb drive, and youd have a tiny bit of room left to add a couple of applications if the basic install didnt have what you wanted

I managed to get aurora beta installed and working on my 2 gig sd card. I spent all day yesterday trying different distros and finally got one that works great.

I know this is a month old and that you already have a solution... Just wanted to give you a heads up about SuSE Studio if you run into this jam again or want to play around. There are a lot of basic distros and you can build your own. I was trying to get a sub-1GB distro (flash drive size) to use with Citrix desktop and couldn't do it without using a ThinClient distro from the vendor.

SuSE Studio easily built some that were in the 1.2GB range...so you should be able to hit 2GB easily...

First check whether you card is supported under linux. If it is, and the distro you choose does not detect it, find the package you need (search for that), and have it handy on a usb or a cd. You may be prompted while installing to place the driver in. Otherwise finish your installation and install it afterwards.
